Gamification and serious games have always fascinated me, because they offer a playful way to connect with real-life situations. The news is something you depend on to keep up-to-date with regional, political and world events. It's important for the public to be able to form their own opinions about issues, rather than simply adopting what they see. That's why a fellow classmate and I developed a serious game for our graduation project, as it allows us to present important topics in an engaging and interactive way.
Begrijpend Biased is an educational mobile browser game that helps high schoolers recognize biases and selection in news posts on Instagram. The player puts himself in the position of a biased writer and reader by deliberately creating news posts that contain prejudices about the topic. By going through this process repeatedly, the player will start thinking critically while reading news, and reduce their own possible confirmation bias. As the UX and UI designer for this project, my focus lied on creating an engaging and intuitive user experience, as well as crafting a compelling gameflow.
You can find the full report and presentation of Begrijpend Biased on this website.
